Palimpsest

Tonia Maddison

25th April - 12th May 2012

The work in this exhibition is inspired by the colours, textures and transformations of the woods after the Swinley Forest fires of May 2011. It is not about the fire in the woods or its recovery, but about layers of time, of memory. It's about layers of geology, of history, of how nature layers the evidence of events. Like a palimpsest the land reveals the traces of its previous form, the lines of its history, our history. It is re-written by the erosions and deposits of time. The burnt woods will become a layer, a seam, a thin black line in the geological record.

A tear in the city

Carol Coates

5th - 21st April 2012

The word 'tear' is ambiguous and can be interpreted as crying or alternatively something that is ripped and pulled apart . Carol's work explores abstraction found in the reality of the everyday where urban spaces largely emptied out of detail and human life become the main focus, and buildings, weathered and scarred by life, suggest broader social divides and tensions'.

Changing Structures

Janet Curley Cannon

12th - 28th January 2012

The European economy seems to be in meltdown, major cities have been ablaze with riots or occupied by protestors. In recent times there seems to be a steady weakening of social values with growing inequalities across many communities. Prominent public voices from politicians to religious leaders are referring to these events as a breakdown of morality in our society. In her solo show Janet explores aspects of contemporary urban society by making use of the physical structure to record the changing state of our social, political and cultural environment.
